The Great Lakes Geek attended the grand opening of the eTech Hatchery on May 11th. Being Spring in Cleveland, the weather was not cooperative but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm for this cool idea.
City of Cleveland Tech Czar Michael C. DeAloia came up with the idea for the eTech Hatchery ("Hatchery"). You have undoubtedly seen the Hatch. It's the glass-enclosed structure right on Star Plaza at 1302 Euclid Avenue. Being in this fishbowl environment gives great publicity to the tenants.
DeAloia says that the mission of the Hatchery is to address a number of issues that confront a fledgling tech-based enterprise including:
- Affordable Space
- Promotion
- Connectivity
- Civic Duty
DeAloia says "Every six months a new tenant will inhabit the Hatchery. Prompting routine dynamic change on the plaza and new interest by the public as to what company is now in the Hatchery. The facility is tailored made for a young company (and priced well too) that is looking for a unique environment with constant promotion. Also, each tenant in the Hatchery will be asked to perform some form of civic duty."
The first tenant in the Hatchery is Portfolio Magazine Online Portfolio Magazine Online (PMO) is a new online magazine that gives students the means to promote themselves and their work in a way no other web site has offered. Launched in September 2005, PMO allows students to post and build their ePortfolios. With this innovative approach, students can also read featured articles and browse related career links and materials.
Shameless Plug: The volunteers of Computers Assisting People (CAP) donated 4 computers to be used by the students in the Hatch.
