NEOSEF Science and Engineering Fair Winners

Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NEOSEF) is a Society for Science affiliated regional science fair. Established in 1953, NEOSEF organizes the annual science and engineering fair for northeast Ohio students and sends the top winners to compete at Regeneron ISEF. At the conclusion of the 2024 NEOSEF the prize winners were announced.

Five high school grand prize winners will receive a $100 cash award and an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, CA May 12-17.

They are:

  • John Anand, Home School, “Scents and Sensibility: Investigating the Influence of Visual Cues on Olfactory Perception on humans and AI using an electronic nose.”
  • Nathan Kalhan, Hawken High School, “Delivery of Nitric Oxide (NO) in relation to Diabetes Mellitus”
  • Robbie Land, Mentor High School, “Examination of the Effects of Noise Pollution on Bird Foraging Behavior”
  • Tatyana Sowerby, Mentor High School, “Accounting for Climate Change in projections of Soil Organic Carbon sequestration from agriculture in Northeast Ohio”
  • Nina Van Zandweghe, Solon High School, “Using Bidirectional Transformer Neural Networks for Advancing Gender Bias Recognition in STEM Job Advertisements”

Two junior high school grand prize winners will receive a cash award of $350.

They are:

  • Ava Hawkins, St. Mary of the Falls, “Lights Out! The Proliferation of Photopollution”
  • Liam Waldron, St. Mary of the Assumption (Mentor), “Bot or Not”

“Please join me in congratulating our grand prize winners,” said Oanh Loi-Powell, NEOSEF board president. “These students epitomize next generation science and deserve recognition, admiration, and appreciation for their hard work. We are immensely proud of them.”
