NEOSA Tech Week 2012 April 17, 2012
Eric Brown, Research Scientist at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center working on the DeepQA project which created the Watson Jeopardy playing system, spoke at a NEOSA Tech Week event in Cleveland.
NEOSA Director Brad Nellis
Brown says don't expect a shrink-wrapped product yet that you can buy and install using the Watson technology. But IBM is working on commercializing the technology especially in the health care and financial services space.

Brown explained how they evaluate and authorize data sources and that the natural learning of Watson contributes to this though an attempt to use the Urban Dictionary was scuttled - by humans.

Eric Brown told of the strategy behind handling puns in Jeopardy clues for IBM Watson.

There were many early challenges to the Watson project. Brown spoke about the process to handle challenges in the early stages of IBM Watson.
The big question on everyone's minds was, "Can IBM Watson pass the Turing Test?"

NEOSA attendees were also interested in the hardware. Just how fast can Watson answer a Jeopardy question using both a single core and the 2880 cores in the cluster?
